My Personal Chef To Go- Wednesday Review

10/01/2013

I, perhaps like you, have a nagging problem every day that refuses to go away. A problem I feel gets in the way of my busy lifestyle, but one I really can't ignore. That problem comes in the form of a question "What am I going to eat?" I admit it, I'm quite spoiled that one of my job perks is tasting great food.

Dining with the Chefs at Hammock Beach Resort
When I get home though... really anything I make just doesn't quite compare. Add to that my commitment to a healthy lifestyle which involves hitting the gym five to six times a week. Many days I just feel exhausted, tired, and confused as to what I can eat while on the go and still feel satisfied while meeting my healthy goals. If only I had a personal chef!

What to eat???

When I heard about J William Culinary I was intrigued... Could it be the answer to my problem had arrived? Here is what I learned.
James W. Phelan - Owner of J William Culinary
Chef James Phelan hails from a notable pedigree in the food industry. Working in well known fine dining restaurants like Matthew's and Medure. In a conversation with Jay he related to me how he created J William Culinary upon the concept that you shouldn't have to choose between healthy food, and fine dining, or convenience for that matter. Jay's concept and menu continued to take shape around what was important to him and a lot of other people out there, health and fitness.

What has resulted is a simple and straight forward approach to what to eat, and one that doesn't hold back on flavor and quality.

J William Culinary is committed to flavor and quality.

Here's how it works:

1. Go to the simple, user friendly website and check out the weekly menu.
2. Select your meals and quantity.
3. Check out and have them delivered to your home or a location near you for pick up. (currently only available in the Jacksonville, FL area, expansion coming....)

As easy as 1,2,3....

Astoundingly easy I know!

Each menu item is thoughtfully considered with extremely high standards in mind using only the highest quality ingredients.

  • Every meal must be 500 calories or less.
  • Meals are created fresh and delivered as such. Never frozen.
  • Every meal is high protein, low sodium.
  • Choice meals are created paleo, gluten free, and or dairy free. (ideal for special diets and allergies)
J William Culinary uses the highest quality ingredients.

For me, this standard is 100% what I need, but not one I can successfully recreate all the time, especially with a picky three year old to feed. I had a chance to taste a variety of the meals and realized what eating clean can really tastes like.... delicious, satisfying, and extremely filling. In fact, looking at the vacuum sealed bags you might think you could easily down a meal in no time, but I found myself splitting my meals and saving some for later because I was so satisfied.

Here are a few of my favorites:

1.Oatmeal Raisin Almond Protein Bar- $4
How it's made- Homemade Protein Bar with Intek Whey Protein, Slivered Almonds, Raisins, Oats, and Peanut Butter.

Tasting Notes- Like a dense chewy peanut butter, oatmeal, raisin cookie.
Perfectly moist, didn't fall apart. Addictive. I shared a bite and thought I might save some but ended up finishing it on my own. Extremely filling. This is a perfect meal replacement on the go. Great recovery after my zumba class. Like having a hearty bowl of oatmeal.

Nutrition details- Gluten Free
320 calories/25 grams of Protein/36 Carbs
A protein bar that will remind you of grandmas cookies!

2. Texas Style Turkey Chili with JalapeƱo Tomato Sauce- $7
How it's made- Ground Turkey and Cubed Turkey Breast with Smoked Chilis in a Jalapeno Tomato Sauce

Tasting Notes- Great texture. I liked the two different forms of turkey, it gave it visual appeal and excellent consistency. The sauce was savory, but didn't carry the expected heat the usual jalapeno influence would bring, making it a great choice for all palates. The spinach was an unexpected inclusion but I enjoyed the addition as it gave it color and an enjoyable balance to the flavor.

Nutrition details- Paleo, Gluten and Dairy Free

Chili any palate will love.

3. Lean Beef Meatballs - $7
How it's made- Lean Beef Meatballs topped with Roasted Tomato Sauce and a side of Brown Rice Pilaf and green beans.

Tasting Notes- Incredible flavor. Extremely comforting. I had a hard time believing this one wasn't bad for me, it was simply so good. Filling enough that I saved half for lunch the next day. Rice pilaf was moist and a great combo with the meat. I like a little more salt so I topped with a sprinkle of sea salt to enhance the flavor a bit more. This one may have topped the list as my current favorite. I'm pretty sure my mouth is still watering thinking about it.

Nutrition details- Dairy Free
500 calories, 42 Grams of Protein, 42 Carbs

Don't let the packaging fool you, this was two meals for me!
As you can see the price point is surprisingly approachable considering the niche market it's in.... but maybe that's really the point. With food as good as this, I'm sure it's not long before the overwhelming demand makes this less of a luxury, and more of the norm. If the public knew they could get food that would help them meet their fitness goals, taste good, and accommodate their busy lifestyle... who could refuse? With Jay's infectiously positive attitude, and stubborn commitment to change the landscape of our current "convenience food" market... I'm thinking very few could refuse.

J William Culinary is changing the landscape of the "convenience food" market.
